What Exactly is a Hoverboard?
A Hoverboard is a self-balancing scooter or self-balancing two-wheeled board, which is a type of portable, rechargeable battery-powered scooter. They typically consist of two wheels arranged side-by-side, with two small platforms between the wheels, on which the rider stands. The device is controlled by the rider's feet, standing on the built-in gyroscopic , sensored pads. What is gyroscopic? It is a spinning wheel or disc in which the axis of rotation is free to assume any orientation by itself. Although self-balancing scooters don't actually hover, people have adopted the term "hoverboard" as a more colloquial way to refer to the vehicles—mainly because it sounds cooler.
How did it get popular?
Hoverboard emerged in the beginning of 2015 when CNN names them as one of the coolest pieces of technology at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. In 2014, several such devices appeared in China, but by 2015, they became widely popular in the United States, following numerous celebrity appearances with the device. You can thank Justin Bieber, Wiz Khalifa, Nick Jonas, Kendall Jenner just to name a few. And all of the other celebrities that have been seen riding them down in public and in their homes. Celebrities were spotted riding hoverboards in many high profile places, and have made the hoverboard a highly publicized item.
Who Invented it?
In 1999, Patmont Motor Werks registered the trademark "Hoverboard" for an "electrically powered two wheeled scooter for terrestrial human transportation" [ and renewed it in 2009. Shane Chen, an American businessman who founded the company Inventist, subsequently made an early claim of inventing the self-balancing scooter device. As of June 2015, the board is made by several manufacturers in China – a pattern common in the country's technology and industrial sector. The boards vary greatly in price and quality. Most of the boards are produced in mass manufacturing factories in Shenzen China. Some newer boards have incorporated Bluetooth speakers, allowing the driver to play music.
What age is it designed for?
It’s a fact that kids love hoverboards. It may be that they’ve seen their favorite celebrity ride it on Instagram, or simply that their friend at school just got one. While there is no actual age limit for an electric hoverboard, it is recommended that the rider be 16 years and older and wear bicycle helmets for safety. If a child is less than 16 years of age it depends on how well they know how to ride a hoverboard and how comfortable you as a parent are to let them ride one!
